Six Things That Will Strengthen You

By Tim Elliott

Joshua 1:9   “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

God commanded us to be strong. The phrase be strong and of good courage is the Hebrew phrase, “Hazaq Amas”. In verse 18 he adds “Only”. “Raq Hazaq Amas”.

My interpretation of this phrase is:

There’s only one way this battle is going to turn out. I’m going to conquer or prevail, because God infuses or fortifies me with His strength. And His strength cannot fail.

Glory To God!!!! This became the battle cry of a Champion. God is looking for Champions. Will you be one?

Here are six things that will give you strength.

  1. There is strength in your mouth

Psalm 8:2 “Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants You have ordained strength,

Because of Your enemies, that You may silence the enemy and the avenger.”

The word ordained here means to “lay the foundation”. What God is saying is the foundation of your strength is the words of your mouth.

The Hebrew word for strength in this verse means boldness, might, power. It also means material or physical strength. God has strength for your life whether you need physical or material strength.

Joel 3:10 says, “Let the weak say, ‘I Am Strong” … Strong here means Champion.

Let the weak say, “I’m a Champion”

I found your strength. It’s in your mouth. Start saying what God says about you. God says, “You are Strong” “You’re A Champion” “You are Healed” “You are provided for by My riches in Glory”

  1. There is strength in your song

Psalm 59:16-17 But I will sing of Your power; Yes, I will sing aloud of Your mercy in the morning; For You have been my defense and refuge in the day of my trouble.

17 To You, O my Strength, I will sing praises; For God is my defense, My God of mercy.

Psalm 68:32-35 Sing to God, you kingdoms of the earth;

Oh, sing praises to the Lord, Selah 33 To Him who rides on the heaven of heavens, which were of old! Indeed, He sends out His voice, a mighty voice. 34 Ascribe strength to God;

His excellence is over Israel, And His strength is in the clouds. 35 O God, You are more awesome than Your holy places. The God of Israel is He who gives strength and power to His people.

Blessed be God!

When your strength is zapped, you feel tired or even feel like you can’t do this day – lift up your voice and sing. There is strength in your song. I don’t know how He does it, but God infuses you with His strength when you begin to sing. One of my favorite songs to sing on a day when I feel tired is found in Psalm 73: 25-26.

Psalm 73:25-26 Whom have I in heaven but You?  And there is none upon earth that I desire besides You. 26  My flesh and my heart fail; {But there is one truth that always shall prevail}

But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

3.  There is strength in the sanctuary.

Psa 96:4 — 6
4 For the Lord is great and greatly to be praised;
He is to be feared above all gods.
5 For all the gods of the peoples are idols,
But the Lord made the heavens.
6 Honor and majesty are before Him;
Strength and beauty are in His sanctuary.

You will find that God will infuse you with His strength when you go to church. There is something about coming together with God’s family and being in His presence that gives you strength. And while you’re there find a job and serve God in it.

Isaiah 40:28 — 31
28 Have you not known?
Have you not heard?
The everlasting God, the Lord,
The Creator of the ends of the earth,
Neither faints nor is weary.
His understanding is unsearchable.
29 He gives power to the weak,
And to those who have no might He increases strength.
30 Even the youths shall faint and be weary,
And the young men shall utterly fall,
31 But those who wait on the Lord
Shall renew their strength;
They shall mount up with wings like eagles,
They shall run and not be weary,
They shall walk and not faint.

Spending time with God in His sanctuary will increase your strength. Make church attendance part of your life. Go To church to meet with God. You’ll find that you will be stronger if you do.

4. There is strength in holiness, justice, righteousness, and the fear of God

Psalm 99:4-5 The King’s strength also loves justice; You have established equity;

You have executed justice and righteousness in Jacob. 5 Exalt the Lord our God,

And worship at His footstool—He is holy.

Proverbs 10:29 The way of the Lord is strength for the upright,  but destruction will come to the workers of iniquity.

When you do things God’s way there is strength. But when you don’t it will zap your strength. Do yourself a favor and find out what God thinks about what your doing and do it His way. Listen to this scripture in Ecclesiastes from the Amplified Bible.

Ecclesiastes 12:13  All has been heard; the end of the matter is: Fear God [revere and worship Him, knowing that He is] and keep His commandments, for this is the whole of man [the full, original purpose of his creation, the object of God’s providence, the root of character, the foundation of all happiness, the adjustment to all inharmonious circumstances and conditions under the sun] and the whole [duty] for every man.

Solomon says that the fear of God {doing what’s right} s the object of God’s providence and the adjustment to all inharmonious circumstance you may face. It sounds like to me that if you do things God’s way you will find a strength that cannot fail.

That brings us to number 5.

  1. There is strength in keeping God’s commandments.

Deuteronomy 11:8  “Therefore you shall keep every commandment which I command you today, that you may be strong, and go in and possess the land which you cross over to possess,”

That ties in with the fear of God. Just do things God’s way so that you may be strong.

  1. Wisdom and knowledge increase your strength

Proverbs 8:12-17

12 “I, wisdom, dwell with prudence,

And find out knowledge and discretion.

13 The fear of the Lord is to hate evil;

Pride and arrogance and the evil way

And the perverse mouth I hate.

14 Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom;

I am understanding, I HAVE STRENGTH.

15 By me kings reign,

And rulers decree justice.

16 By me princes rule, and nobles,

All the judges of [a]the earth.

17 I love those who love me,

And those who seek me diligently will find me.

Listen to what wisdom says – those who seek me diligently will find me. I HAVE STRENGTH.

Strength takes diligence. You have to seek wisdom if you want to walk in God’s strength. Take a look at Proverbs 24:5

A wise man is strong,

Yes, a man of knowledge increases strength;

If you take the Passion Translation and the NET translation this verse says

Wisdom can make anyone into a mighty warrior, and a man of knowledge makes his strength stronger.

I like that. A mighty warrior is a champion. Wisdom will make you into a champion. And increasing knowledge will also increase your strength. So here a  few things that you can do to increase your knowledge and thereby increase your strength.

  1. Pay attention when the minister is preaching and take notes.
  2. Read and study the Bible for yourself.
  3. Read books. Og Mandino said one time when I was in a service with him.. “You’ll be the same person in five years except for the people you meet and the books you read.”
  4. Listen to sermons on purpose. There are so many out there that you can find someone to listen to. Make sure they are teaching sound doctrine. Hey you could listen to my sermons. Here’s a link to one on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PR7MXeI0Ids

We could say so much more about strength, but I’ll just encourage you to begin to do the six things here that will give you strength.
